Library Physical Space - What if anything could/should be done? Tuesday March 17

There were a lot of recommendations as to how to change the library environment.


For instance from the T4L document

• multiple spaces for individual, small group, and whole class learning
• virtual library spaces for study, support, and relaxation available 24/7
• homework help from the school library webpage
• management of student information resources and work spaces, both physical and virtual
Some of these recommendations will be easy to implement - ex. homework help
I have no idea what could/should if anything be done to the physical library space itself. Attached is a rough sketch of the library.

Wikispaces: Another first for me

It's really great that this course has me blogging periodically, it's definitely helping me to reflect on my own learning by sharing it with the internet. It's a bit strange not knowing who might come across your work but it has been a benefit to my own personal development nonetheless.  Today I learned about wiki's and created my very first wiki space http://techlovinglibrarian.wikispaces.com. I had the opportunity to play with it a little bit. I still need more time to see how it all works but I really like the ability to use widgets and the calendar feature would be very helpful for school wide library events.  Do you use wikispaces with your students? It was a bit discouraging at how difficult it was to find resources for student use for the learning about our First Nations  Métis and Inuit.  This resource is really great because it is cross-curricular. A teacher could use the stories contained in this free, online resource to cover Ontario Curriculum expectations in Language, Math and Social Studies. The illustrations are really well done. Check it out! http://mathcatcher.irmacs.sfu.ca/stories. I love how the websites name is mathcatcher, makes math seem all dreamy and fun.

Sunday March 15 What is a Learning Commons? Continued

I realize that I titled the last post Saturday because the truth is that I did write that information yesterday. It was today that I decided I would lob my learning through this blog - just to avoid any confusion for my readers.   Here's the website from my school http://dpcdsb.org/GSHEP   I see we have a twitter window at the bottom however this is the board's twitter profile and not specifically my schools twitter profile so this is something that we could do instead, to have our events being posted regularly on twitter. I know how to create a twitter profile so I will have to talk to the principal first to get the official go ahead to do this. I'd also like to get a Facebook profile going though I'm thinking this is going to be less supported by my board as we used to have many workshops being offered that pointed out the many hazards of having our how personal profiles on Facebook and were discouraged from being friends with students.
